Leverage changes ahead of news and the hidden cost of holding through

Post by Shadow Trader »

Some brokers reduce available leverage ahead of major events, often with a notice posted somewhere easy to miss. A position opened under high leverage in the morning might become a margin problem by the afternoon, with nothing changed in the trade itself.

The effect is straightforward. Required margin increases, free margin shrinks, and any additional trade may be refused. In extreme cases, existing positions may be closed if the account no longer meets the requirement.

This is especially relevant for traders who run several positions across correlated pairs. A single news event can make all of them tighter in terms of margin at the same moment.

Before trading anywhere near scheduled high-impact events, check the broker's announcements and the live margin requirement per pair. Some brokers publish the change in advance, and some only apply it quietly.

A practical habit is to keep a note of the broker's announcement page or email list, since changes to leverage and margin are often posted there first. Some platforms also show the live margin requirement per symbol in the contract specification window, which is worth checking before a scheduled high-impact event.

Does your broker give advance notice of leverage reductions around news, and how have you found out about them in the past?

A margin requirement that jumps mid-day is a real risk for anyone running several positions at once. Keeping free margin at a level that would survive the reduced leverage, and reading the broker's notices page each Monday, avoids being forced out by a rule change rather than by the market.
