Triple swap on Wednesday and why it still matters to short-term traders

Post by Shadow Trader »

Swap charges seem irrelevant to scalpers because positions rarely stay open overnight. That is true until a position does stay open overnight by accident, or until a Wednesday rollover catches one.

Spot FX settles two business days after the trade date. To keep a position open past the rollover time, the broker rolls the settlement date forward, which generates a swap debit or credit. Wednesday's rollover is typically charged three times because it covers the weekend that follows the Thursday-to-Friday settlement shift.

The consequence for a short-term trader is small but real. A forgotten trade sitting through a Wednesday rollover on a pair with a high negative swap can quietly eat several pips of expected profit.

Anyone who sometimes holds a scalp longer than planned should check the long and short swap values for each pair they trade, and build a habit of flattening before the rollover window on Wednesdays.

The sign of the swap matters as well. On some pairs, one direction earns a small credit while the other pays a heavy charge, so the same forgotten trade could be mildly positive or quite expensive depending on direction. Reviewing both columns for each pair, not just the one usually traded, avoids surprises.

Which pairs in your watchlist carry the most punishing swaps, and has a triple swap ever surprised you?
