NinjaTrader and forex: when a futures workflow helps

Post by Shadow Trader »

NinjaTrader is best known for futures trading, with strong charting, order management and a large community of futures scalpers. Some forex traders use it, either with forex-capable brokers or via futures on currencies such as the euro and yen contracts.

Reasons to consider it: depth of market and real volume data on futures, a robust simulated trading environment, advanced order types with built-in OCO, and a scripting environment in C#. Currency futures offer centralised, transparent pricing, with trade-by-trade data that spot lacks.

Drawbacks include contract specifications with expiries, margins that differ from retail forex, different trading hours, and fees that are structured per contract. Tick sizes are larger, and the learning curve is real.

For a spot scalper curious about order flow, trading currency futures with a proper order book is a way to study market microstructure, even on a small scale. Costs and capital requirements should be compared honestly with a spot account.

Trying it first in simulation, using the platform's replay features, shows whether the workflow suits the style.

For anyone who tries it, a small note on costs: futures commissions are per contract per side, and data fees can be separate from the platform licence. Comparing the all-in cost of a round turn on a comparable notional against a spot account tells whether the move makes economic sense.

Has a futures-based platform ever been tried for currency scalping, and what did it reveal that spot didn't?
