Prime of prime brokers: who stands behind the broker

Post by Shadow Trader »

A retail forex broker doesn't create liquidity from nothing. Behind it sit liquidity providers, and often an intermediary called a prime of prime, or PoP. The PoP has credit lines with large prime brokers and banks, and re-extends access to smaller firms that couldn't qualify directly.

Why does it matter? Because the broker's execution quality depends on this chain. The PoP aggregates prices from banks and non-bank market makers, adds a markup, and passes them on. Each layer adds cost and delay, and each layer can fail. A broker that loses its PoP relationship can lose access to liquidity overnight, causing wide spreads, rejections or worse.

Some brokers advertise their liquidity providers, and some use several PoPs for redundancy. Others are opaque.

Asking a broker who its liquidity providers are, and whether it uses more than one, is a fair due diligence question. Vague answers aren't proof of trouble, but clear ones add confidence.

Counterparty chains also explain why some brokers failed in extreme events: their upstream partners cut credit when volatility spiked.

Has a broker ever disclosed its liquidity chain, and did the information change how much capital went there?
