India's Onshore FX Rules: Why Retail Access Looks Different There

Post by Shadow Trader »

India regulates foreign exchange through the Foreign Exchange Management Act and rules administered by the Reserve Bank of India. In general terms, retail participation in currency trading has been permitted only in a narrow form: rupee-based contracts on recognised Indian exchanges, with the allowed pairs and contract types set by regulators.

The Reserve Bank has also cautioned the public about offshore platforms that offer margin trading in foreign currency pairs to residents, and has published lists of entities it considers unauthorised. Details, including which pairs and contract types qualify, have been revised over the years, so current notices matter more than recollections from older discussions.

The setup shapes liquidity as well. Onshore rupee trading follows local hours, while an offshore market in non-deliverable forwards prices the rupee when onshore desks are closed. Global spot pairs such as EUR/USD, which dominate scalping elsewhere, are commonly described as outside what residents may trade on margin through foreign brokers, although interpretations and enforcement positions can differ.

Anyone based in India should read the current notices from the Reserve Bank of India and the securities regulator directly before choosing a venue. A forum summary, including this one, is only a starting point and can fall out of date quickly.
