Moving Average Lag: What Changing the Period Really Trades Away

Post by Shadow Trader »

A simple moving average of N bars trails price by roughly half its window, about (N-1)/2 bars during a steady trend. That lag is not a flaw to be tuned away. It is the direct price paid for smoothing, and every period choice simply slides along one trade-off between responsiveness and noise.

Shortening the period makes the line hug price, which produces earlier crossovers but also more false ones, since random wiggles of a few pips are enough to flip the slope. Lengthening the period filters those wiggles, yet signals arrive after a large part of the move has already printed. Exponential and weighted versions reshape the weights, giving recent bars more influence, but the lag does not disappear. It is redistributed, and the line becomes more sensitive to single spikes.

A useful habit is to measure lag directly, by comparing the bar at which a line turns with the bar at which price actually turned across a sample of swings. The result often shows that the period matters less than the timeframe and the spread cost per signal. For scalpers, a moving average works better as a description of recent direction and a dynamic reference level than as a trigger that anticipates anything.
