Renko and Range Bars: Clean Charts With Hidden Trade-Offs

Post by Shadow Trader »

Renko and range bars discard time and plot only price movement of a fixed size. The appeal is obvious: noise below the brick size disappears, trends look orderly, and sideways chop is compressed into few bars.

The first trade-off is that a lack of time means a lack of context. A brick that took ten seconds and a brick that took forty minutes look identical, although the market conditions behind them differ greatly. Speed of movement, often among the most informative features on a short timeframe, is erased.

The second concern is repainting. Some renko implementations build bricks from the closes of time-based candles, others from ticks. Versions that adjust or replace a previous brick as data arrives can make historical charts look cleaner than the live experience was. A reversal rule, typically requiring two bricks of movement, also means signals are structurally late.

Brick size itself is a parameter that can be tuned until the history looks perfect, which invites curve fitting. Testing a brick-based rule requires attention to how the platform constructs bricks, and live results should be compared against that construction rather than the picture on the screen.
