Pullback or Breakout Entries: Two Very Different Cost Profiles

Post by Shadow Trader »

Pullback and breakout entries are often compared by win rate, yet their cost profiles differ in ways that matter more when holding times are short. A breakout entry buys or sells into movement, usually when the spread is momentarily wider and liquidity is being consumed. A pullback entry waits for price to retrace into a zone, typically when quotes are calmer.

Breakouts tend to carry higher slippage on market orders and a higher share of false starts, because many participants place orders at the same obvious level. Stop orders placed beyond a range edge can fill several pips from the trigger price during fast moves. The reward is that a confirmed breakout needs little adverse excursion, so stops can sit closer.

Pullback entries usually fill nearer the intended price and allow tighter, structure-based stops. The trade-off is missed trades: strong moves often never retrace, so the method silently skips the best momentum. Limit orders also face adverse selection, since they fill most reliably when price is continuing against them.

A fair comparison therefore measures average slippage, spread paid at entry, missed-trade rate and stop distance for each approach separately. Whichever method looks superior on a chart may simply be cheaper to execute, and that difference deserves its own column in a journal.
