USD/CHF as EUR/USD's Reflection, and Where the Mirror Cracks

Post by Shadow Trader »

USD/CHF is frequently called the mirror of EUR/USD, because the euro and the franc are closely tied through Switzerland's trade and financial links with the euro area. When the dollar strengthens broadly, EUR/USD tends to fall while USD/CHF tends to rise, and the two charts often look like inverted copies of each other.

The mirror is not exact. The franc carries safe-haven demand that the euro lacks, and the Swiss National Bank has a record of influencing its currency through policy rates and foreign exchange operations. During risk-off episodes, the franc can strengthen alongside a weaker euro, which pulls the two pairs away from perfect inversion. European Central Bank decisions move both, but Swiss inflation data and SNB communication move only one.

For risk management the implication is concrete. Holding a long EUR/USD position and a short USD/CHF position is largely the same dollar view expressed twice, so real exposure is larger than a count of positions suggests. USD/CHF also frequently carries a wider spread and thinner liquidity, so treating it as a cheaper substitute is rarely correct. Checking the rolling correlation over recent weeks, rather than assuming it, shows how closely the mirror currently holds.
