Algorithmic competition and the retail scalper

Post by Shadow Trader »

Retail scalpers compete, whether they like it or not, with firms that spend millions on infrastructure. Co-located servers, microsecond execution, teams of researchers. How can anyone with a laptop and a VPS expect to win?

By choosing battles carefully. The speed race is unwinnable. But institutional players avoid some niches because they're too small, too capacity-limited or too operationally awkward. A retail account trading modest size can exploit patterns that wouldn't move the needle for a large fund.

It also helps to avoid direct competition. Strategies based on latency or pure speed face the sharpest rivals. Strategies based on slower patterns, less crowded pairs, or specific session behaviours are less contested.

Costs are another battleground. Institutions pay far lower spreads. Retail traders must pick strategies whose edge comfortably exceeds the cost handicap.

Being realistic about the competition is the first step toward finding a corner where an edge can survive.

What niche or approach feels least exposed to institutional competition, and why?
