FOMO and the move that left without anyone

Post by Shadow Trader »

A big candle shoots up while the entry rules were waiting for a pullback. The first reaction is rarely calm. It's a jolt: it's leaving, jump in now.

That jolt is FOMO, and it produces some of the worst entries imaginable. Chasing means buying after the move has already happened, at a worse price, with a stop that has to sit further away. The reward-to-risk ratio collapses before the trade even starts.

A couple of reframes help. A missed move is not a loss. No money left the account. The market also offers new setups every hour, and the supply never runs dry.

A practical technique is writing down the missed trade in the journal, with what it would have returned. It sounds like torture, but it also shows how often the "missed" move would have been a loser had it been taken with the actual rules.

For anyone curious how often chasing works: run a small test on the journal. Compare trades taken within the standard entry rules against trades taken after a big candle had already gone. The chasing group usually shows a far worse average result, even though individual winners from it are the memorable ones.

How is FOMO handled in real time, and what reminder works the best?

Writing down the reason for wanting to enter is a good technique. We do something similar: when FOMO hits, the trader has to state the stop and target for the chase entry before clicking. Almost always, the stop needs to be twice as wide as normal and the target is the same, and seeing the reward-to-risk number is usually enough to stop.

Another thing that helps is keeping a list of missed moves and checking a week later. Most of them, seen afterwards, either retraced or would have been entered at the top.

The writing down part is what helped me most. I kept a list of every move I felt the urge to chase for about six weeks, with the price where I would have jumped in and where my rules would have put the stop. Out of about thirty of them, only around a third would have reached a one to one target before coming back through my imaginary stop.

The physical side matters as well. I noticed that when FOMO hits, my hand is already on the mouse before I have thought anything through. So I moved my order buttons to a second screen, which forces me to turn my head and look at another window before I can click. It is a small delay of a couple of seconds, but often that is enough.

The other thing I remind myself of is that the move I missed usually comes back to a level I can use within the session. Not always, but often enough that waiting costs me far less than chasing did.
