Order comments and tags for tracking strategies

Post by Shadow Trader »

Most platforms allow a comment on each order. Hardly anyone uses it, and that's a missed opportunity.

A short tag such as "ORB1" or "PB-M5" or "NEWS-FADE" written into the comment field makes later analysis far easier. The platform's history export carries the tag along, so trades can be grouped by setup without any manual matching.

It also helps when several strategies run on the same account. A glance at the open positions shows which strategy owns which trade.

Keep tags short, consistent, and documented. A tag scheme that changes every month defeats the purpose.

A bonus use: add a code for the planned risk, such as "R1", so that deviations from the plan show up clearly in the data.

If the platform supports it, a good scheme is three short fields joined together: strategy code, session, and setup grade. Something like "ORB-LON-A". After a few hundred trades, sorting by each part shows which combinations earn their keep and which ones quietly lose.

Is there a tagging system in use, and what categories turned out to be the most revealing in the numbers?
