The Leverage Cap Trade-Off Between Regulated and Offshore Entities

Post by Shadow Trader »

Maximum leverage for retail clients varies widely by jurisdiction. Some regulators cap major pairs at a low double-digit ratio, while offshore entities may offer several hundred to one or more. The cap is a policy choice about retail loss rates, not a measure of broker quality.

Higher leverage appeals to scalpers because it frees margin and allows small price targets to matter. The trade-off is that the same entity often sits under lighter oversight, with fewer client money rules, weaker dispute channels and no compensation scheme. Leverage and protection tend to move in opposite directions.

Leverage also interacts with risk of ruin. A cap is a ceiling, not a recommended size. Effective leverage is position notional divided by equity, and many disciplined traders stay far below the maximum. Higher available leverage mainly raises the speed at which an error becomes fatal.

A sensible comparison weighs what is gained, such as margin efficiency, against what is given up, such as recourse. It is also worth reading how limits change during news, at weekends or on large positions, since brokers often reduce leverage dynamically.
