Signal-Chasing and Social Media as a Hidden Attention Drain

Post by Shadow Trader »

Scalping demands concentrated attention. Every notification, chat room alert, or social media feed pulling focus away from the chart carries a cost, even when the content is interesting. The cost is not only lost time but also lost consistency, since a plan built on one set of rules is easily overwritten by someone else's confident opinion.

Signal-chasing is a related problem. Following outside calls shifts the decision from a tested process to borrowed conviction. When such a trade loses, there is nothing to review, because the reasoning was never the trader's own. When it wins, it may reinforce the habit without teaching anything.

Social feeds also encourage comparison. Screenshots of winning trades show only selected outcomes, and they tend to raise expectations about what is normal. That pressure can push a scalper toward oversized risk or abandoned rules.

Practical boundaries help. Notifications can be muted during sessions, feeds closed until the session ends, and information sources limited to a short, deliberate list. Reading commentary after the session, as material for the journal, turns the same content from a distraction into a learning input. The goal is not isolation but control over when outside opinion is allowed to reach the decision.
