The promise that you can never owe the broker money sounds simple: you can't lose more than your deposit. But the details vary a lot depending on the broker and entity, and they matter if you trade gold or anything else that gaps.
Things to check in the terms:
Who it applies to. Often only retail clients. If you opted into professional status, you may have lost it.
Per account or per client. Some brokers offset a negative balance on one account against a positive balance on another.
Exclusions. Some terms exclude cases of "abusive trading" or market manipulation, which can be very broadly defined.
Timing. Is the balance reset automatically, or do you have to request it?
Offshore entities. NBP is sometimes offered as a policy, not a legal requirement, and can be withdrawn.
Why it matters for scalpers: high leverage plus a large gap (think CHF in 2015) can push an account deeply negative in seconds.
I'd recommend asking support directly and getting a written confirmation for your account type. Has anyone actually had NBP applied after a big gap? How long did it take to get the balance reset?
Brokers advertise negative balance protection as if it were a universal safety net. In regulated regions, it's often required for retail clients. But the details vary, and it's rarely as automatic as it sounds.
Some brokers apply the protection only after a formal request. Others apply it automatically but only if the loss occurred during a specific type of event. A few exclude certain account types, professional status, or promotions.
For scalpers, the situation that matters is a fast gap. A news event or flash move produces a stop-out at a price far beyond the margin. The account goes negative, and the broker decides how to handle it.
If the protection works, the balance is reset to zero. If not, a debt appears. In some jurisdictions, brokers pursue the debt. In others, they absorb it.
The relevant paragraph in the client agreement usually runs a few lines. Reading it before depositing takes two minutes. Finding out after a gap is much less pleasant.
Anyone actually had negative balance protection kick in, and how smooth was the process?
