Breaking the Revenge-Trade Cycle With Rules Written in Advance

Post by Shadow Trader »

The revenge trade follows a predictable sequence. A loss lands, the mind registers it as an injury, and the next entry is chosen to repair that injury instead of to exploit an edge. Size increases, criteria loosen, and a second loss makes the urge stronger rather than weaker.

Willpower during that state is unreliable, because the same emotional arousal that creates the urge also degrades judgment. For that reason, interruption works better as a mechanical rule than as an intention. Rules written while calm do not need to be argued with while agitated.

Examples include a mandatory pause of fixed length after a stop-out, a daily loss limit that closes the platform, or a requirement to write one sentence naming the setup before any trade that follows a loss. Friction is the point. Each step gives the rational part of the process time to catch up.

Reviewing logs for trades taken within minutes of a loss often reveals a clear pattern in their results. That evidence, rather than self-criticism, is what makes the rules feel worth following.
