Pip Value on Cross Pairs and the Account Currency Trap

Post by Shadow Trader »

Pip value is denominated in the second currency of a pair, and it must be converted into the account currency before position sizing makes sense. On pairs where the account currency is the quote, such as EURUSD for a dollar account, a standard lot is worth about 10 dollars per pip. Crosses break that shortcut.

Consider EURGBP on a dollar account. One pip on a standard lot equals 10 pounds, so converting to dollars requires the current GBPUSD rate. If sterling trades at 1.30, that pip is worth about 13 dollars. USDJPY works differently: a pip on a standard lot is 1,000 yen, converted at the prevailing USDJPY rate, so its dollar value shifts as price moves.

Ignoring this creates inconsistent risk. A 10-pip stop on EURGBP and a 10-pip stop on EURUSD, at the same lot size, carry different dollar risk. Size should be derived from the risk amount divided by the stop distance multiplied by the per-lot pip value, using live conversion rates.

Many platforms display the figure automatically, but verifying it periodically against a manual calculation catches errors, particularly on exotic crosses where conversion passes through two currencies.
