Buy the Rumor, Sell the Fact: Spotting Crowded Pre-Event Positioning

Post by Shadow Trader »

Markets move ahead of scheduled events, and the run-up can matter more than the release. When a currency has rallied for days into a rate decision that is widely expected, much of the good news is already reflected in price.

Sell-the-fact behavior appears when the anticipated event arrives as expected and participants who bought the rumor close positions. The result can be a decline on a result that appears favorable. It is not a rule: if the outcome exceeds even the elevated expectation, the trend can extend.

Indicators of crowded positioning include persistent one-directional drift in the days prior, option risk reversals skewed in one direction, and weekly positioning reports. Each has limits, since reports are delayed and options data is not available to most retail traders in a clean form.

A scalper can still observe a simpler clue: how far price traveled in the sessions leading up to the event compared with the typical range. An extended approach combined with a muted first reaction is a pattern worth logging. Logging, not assuming, is the key, because outcomes vary by event and by market regime.
