Spot Is Just a Forward With a Two-Day Horizon

Post by Shadow Trader »

Quoted spot rates feel like the foundation of currency trading, yet the market treats spot as the shortest standard forward. It settles on a value date two business days away for most pairs, and every price carries that settlement date implicitly.

Because a position held past the daily cutoff cannot remain open without settling, brokers roll it forward. This usually involves a tomorrow-next swap, which moves the value date by one business day. The interest differential built into that swap becomes the rollover credit or debit seen on a statement.

The common cutoff is 5 pm New York time, when the dealing day changes for most platforms. That moment explains why spreads sometimes widen and liquidity thins right at the rollover. Providers reprice their books, and funding costs are recalculated.

For scalpers, the practical meaning is that spot trading is never entirely free of funding mechanics. Positions closed before the cutoff avoid the swap, while those carried across it pay or earn the points. Knowing that spot is simply a forward with the shortest convention helps make sense of rollover timing, weekend gaps and why swap rates change when interest rates shift.
