Your Platform Freezes With a Position Open

Your Platform Freezes With a Position Open

Situation: the platform stops responding. Price is moving fast, and your position of 0.40 lots is open. A stop loss exists on the server, but you are unsure of the current price.

Run a sequence. First, stay calm, and check whether the problem is your connection or the platform. Look at another device: the broker's mobile app or the web terminal.

Second, if you can reach the account, check that the position and its stop are in place, and look at the current price. Do not add or change orders in a panic.

Third, if you cannot reach it, call the broker's dealing desk by phone, using the number you saved beforehand. Give your account number, verify identity, and ask them to confirm your position and, if necessary, to close it. Note the time of the call.

Fourth, keep records. Screenshots of any error messages, the times, and the platform status. These support a claim if the freeze caused a loss.

Fifth, understand what protects you. A stop order stored on the server will execute even without your connection. A stop managed by software on your computer will not. This is the reason to use server-side stops.

After the event, review: what is the status of positions? Did the broker report an outage? Check your terms for compensation.

Improve the setup: a backup device, a mobile hotspot, and saved phone numbers.

Exercise: test your backup path today, from a second device, without trading.

Saving the dealing desk phone number before you need it is the key point, and many people never do. We keep it in the phone contacts and in a note on the monitor.

One more detail: when calling, have the account number and the position ticket ready. The dealer will usually confirm the position and can close it on your instruction, but they need to identify it quickly. Also, write down the time of the call and what you asked for, in case the fill price is disputed later.

After the event, check whether the freeze was the platform, the VPS, or the internet. Our worst case was a Windows update that started during the session.

The screen locks up, the price stops updating, and a click on the button seems to do nothing. A few seconds later the platform wakes up and there is either a position or there isn't.

Behind that freeze, several things could be going on. The platform might be choking on a flood of quote updates. The broker's server might be queuing orders. The internet connection might be saturated. Each has a different outcome, and the screen can't say which one is happening.

The dangerous part is the double click. A frozen platform gets clicked again, and then again. When the queue clears, three positions appear where one was intended. On a leveraged scalping account, that is a very bad surprise, and it arrives at the worst possible moment, with spreads wide and stops useless.

Some platforms offer a setting that disables one-click trading or adds a confirmation step. That setting is annoying until the first time it saves a position from tripling.

Habits that help after a freeze:

- Check the trade tab and the history tab before clicking anything else, because the order may have gone through
- Look at the pending orders list for stray entries
- Confirm the connection indicator before assuming the platform is live
- Wait for the spread to settle before sending anything new

It's also worth asking the broker how orders sent during a freeze are handled. Some servers process them in the order received, and some discard anything older than a few seconds. The answer changes how safe a repeated click is.

The cleanest protection is simply avoiding trading during the first minute of a major release, which is when most freezes happen.

Has a frozen platform ever resulted in duplicate positions, and what changed afterwards?

The first step, checking whether it's your connection or the platform, saves a lot of confusion. If other websites load normally, the problem may be the platform or the broker's server. If nothing loads, it's your internet connection. Each needs a different response. For a connection problem, switching to mobile data on a phone is often the fastest fix. For a platform problem, the web terminal or mobile app may still work, since they often connect through different servers. Knowing which is which in the first minute helps choose the right backup route quickly.

This happened to me once on a Friday afternoon, with a platform that hung for almost four minutes while I was holding a gold position. What saved me was that I had the broker's web terminal bookmarked on my phone and logged in beforehand, so I could see within a minute that the stop was still sitting on the server and the trade was fine.

The thing I added after that is a short card taped under my monitor with the account number, the dealing desk line, and the exact words I want to say on the call. Under stress I forget things, and having it written down means the call takes thirty seconds instead of five minutes. I also keep my phone on mobile data, not the home wifi, so a router problem doesn't take out both paths at once.

One more tip: after any freeze, I look at the platform's journal tab before touching anything. It usually shows whether my orders were received, rejected or queued, and that tells me what really happened.

The advice not to add or change orders in a panic is important. When a platform reconnects after a freeze, there can be a backlog of price updates, and the screen may show prices that are already stale. Placing a new order based on that display could fill at a very different price. Waiting a moment for the platform to stabilise, and checking the current price on a second source, avoids that mistake. If the existing stop and target are in place on the server, there's usually no need to act immediately, even if the situation feels urgent.

Keeping records, as the fourth step says, is what makes a compensation claim possible later. Screenshots with timestamps, notes of when the freeze started and ended, and a record of any phone calls to the broker all support the case. Many brokers' terms limit their liability for platform outages, but some will compensate if the outage was on their side and the client can show a loss resulted from it. Without records, the claim is much harder to make. A simple notes file on the phone, started as soon as the problem appears, is enough to capture the key details.

The difference between server side and client side stops is the most important technical point. A stop loss placed through the platform's normal order window is stored on the broker's server and executes regardless of your connection. A trailing stop on some platforms, or a stop managed by an expert advisor, may run on your computer and stop working if the platform closes. Checking which of your stops are server side is a five minute task worth doing. Has anyone here had a platform freeze with a client side trailing stop? It would be useful to hear what happened.
