Borrowing prop firm style rules for a personal account

Post by Shadow Trader »

Funded account programs impose strict rules: a maximum daily loss, a maximum total drawdown, sometimes a minimum number of trading days and restrictions around news. Whatever you think of those programs, their rules mirror what good risk management looks like, and you can adopt similar ones on a personal account at no cost. For example, set a daily loss limit of two percent and a total drawdown limit of eight to ten percent. If you hit the daily limit, you stop for the day. If you reach the total limit, you stop trading and spend a week reviewing. Add a rule not to hold positions through high impact news unless it is part of your plan. These constraints force consistency and prevent single bad days from wrecking the account. They also make it easier to evaluate your performance, since you are trading within defined boundaries. If you are considering joining an evaluation, practicing under these rules on a demo or small live account first is a cheap way to see whether you can follow them. Rules you cannot follow on your own money will not become easier when a fee is attached.

Adopting prop firm style rules on a personal account is a great idea. It adds discipline without the cost of a challenge. A daily loss limit and a total drawdown limit are simple to set and very effective.
