After a winning streak: why overconfidence is the quieter danger

Post by Shadow Trader »

Everyone prepares for losing streaks, but winning streaks can be just as dangerous. After several wins, you start to feel that you have mastered the market, and your behavior shifts subtly. Position sizes creep up, filters get ignored, and marginal setups seem acceptable. The first sign is often a trade you would not have taken last month. I guard against this by keeping my risk fixed regardless of recent results, and by reviewing rule compliance weekly, not just profit. If my profit rises while compliance falls, that is a warning. I also remind myself that a streak of wins is expected from time to time in a strategy with a decent win rate, and does not prove that my skill has improved. Some traders take a day off after reaching a weekly profit target, which helps prevent giving gains back through overactivity. Whatever you do, treat success as data, not as permission to change the plan. The same discipline that protects you during losses should apply when things are going well.

The worst month in my journal came straight after my best. Nothing changed in the setups, I just started taking B grade entries because the A grades felt easy. Now after three straight winners I reread the checklist before the next order, which sounds silly but has stopped that pattern.
