Limit order at the zone or confirmation entry? A fair comparison

Post by Shadow Trader »

There are two broad ways to enter after you mark a zone. One is to place a limit order at the zone and let price come to you. The other is to wait for price to reach the zone, then wait for a lower timeframe break of structure before entering. The first gets a better price and requires less screen time, but it takes every touch, including the ones that fail. The second filters out some failures but enters later, often with a wider stop or a smaller reward to risk. Neither is superior in general. The right choice depends on the quality of the zone and your tolerance for being wrong. When a zone has strong confluence, such as sweep, displacement, and higher timeframe alignment, I tend to use a limit entry. When confluence is weaker, I prefer confirmation, accepting a worse price in exchange for a clearer signal. I log which approach I used on each trade and compare results monthly. If you never compare, you cannot know whether your preference is rational or just comfort.

A fair comparison. One option between the two is a limit order at the zone with a smaller size, then adding on confirmation. The first part catches the clean reactions, the second adds when the lower timeframe agrees. It needs strict rules on total risk, but it reduced the frustration of missed moves for me without taking every failed touch at full size.
