Internal vs external structure, and why I stopped marking every swing

Post by Shadow Trader »

When I first learned structure I marked every swing high and low on every timeframe. The chart looked like a spider web and I contradicted myself constantly. The fix was separating external structure from internal structure. External structure is the major swing range, the highs and lows that define the larger leg. Internal structure is the smaller noise inside that range. A break of internal structure inside an external pullback is just a pullback continuing or ending. It does not mean the trend flipped. I only call a trend change when external structure breaks with a close. Everything else is context. In practice I mark external swings on the higher timeframe, and only use internal breaks on the lower one as a timing tool for entries within the higher bias. If the two disagree, I trust the higher one and either wait or skip. It sounds simple, but it removes a huge amount of second guessing. Fewer lines, fewer labels, fewer conflicting stories.
