XAGUSD vs XAUUSD: why silver stops hurt more on the same idea

Post by FXS London Scalper »

Gold breaks a level, silver breaks the matching level, both look like the same trade. In practice, silver stops tend to get hit more often and the losses are larger relative to the target.

Reasons:

- Volatility. Silver typically moves 1.5–2x more in percentage terms than gold on the same day.
- Thinner liquidity, so spikes through stops are bigger.
- Wider spread as a share of the move, especially outside London and NY hours.
- Contract quirks: different contract sizes and tick values per broker make it easy to size wrong.

If you want to trade both, a few adjustments:
  • Size silver trades from the stop distance, never as "same lot as gold".
  • Use a wider stop in ATR terms: if gold uses 0.5x 15-minute ATR, silver might need 0.7x.
  • Avoid silver in the first minute after US data. The fills are usually far worse than on gold.
  • Check the gold/silver ratio trend. When the ratio is moving fast, one metal is leading and the other is lagging.
Does anyone prefer silver over gold for scalping? What makes it worth the extra noise?

Hi FXS London Scalper,

yeah, this is true and i found out that in recent time, when i had buying positions on XAGUSD and XAUUSD two times at similar levels.

For second time Gold made like 30 percent retracement back after the drop on another hand silver fall down three times more and retracement was only 10 percent.

So i decided to check it out deeper and i found out, that this is very common in like 60-65 percent of times, so its possible to create trading strategy on that ;-)

PTScalper, the comparison between the two retracements is a good illustration of why the same idea in silver needs a different size. If silver typically moves around two to three times as far as gold in percentage terms on a given day, then the same stop distance in percent gives a much higher chance of being hit. Sizing each by the typical recent range of each metal rather than by the same lot keeps the risk comparable when both are traded on one idea.

1. The Execution Interface (The Adapter)

Define a strict interface that your trading algorithms depend on, rather than referencing the broker API directly. This interface should return standardized domain objects (e.g., ExecutionResult, PositionState) rather than broker-specific types.
