When a few trades go wrong in quick succession, some traders open an opposite position instead of closing the losing one, hoping to "lock" the loss and unwind it later. Hedging mode in MT5 makes this easy.
Why it feels helpful:
- The loss stops growing.
- There's time to think.
- It avoids the finality of closing at a loss.
Why it usually isn't:
- The loss is already real. Locking it doesn't change that; it just keeps two positions open.
- Costs double: spread and commission on both sides, plus swap if held overnight.
- Unwinding requires guessing the direction again, twice: when to close each leg.
- It can hide the true state of the account, making it easier to keep trading in a damaged state.
In most cases, closing the losing position and taking a break is cleaner. The decision to re-enter can then be made with a clear head and a fresh setup.
Some prop firms prohibit hedging within the same account, which makes the question irrelevant there.
Have you used hedging to manage losses? How did unwinding go?
