New traders often ask experienced ones for help, and the experienced ones often want to give it. The relationship works better when both sides know where the boundaries are.
Reasonable things to ask a mentor or more experienced member:
- Feedback on a specific trade, with chart, rules and reasoning attached.
- A review of your trading plan or checklist.
- Recommendations on how to measure something (costs, slippage, adherence).
- Their view on a common mistake you keep making.
Things that tend to strain the relationship:
- "What would you do right now?" during a live trade.
- Asking for signals or entries.
- Daily messages without having done the basic work first.
- Asking them to explain losses that come from breaking your own rules.
From the mentor side, it helps to set limits early: how often, through which channel, and what the mentee should prepare beforehand.
On a forum, the best mentoring often happens in public threads where everyone benefits, rather than private messages.
If you've been on either side of this, what worked and what didn't?
