Gold's one-minute chart is noisy. Plenty of candles look like the start of a move and then reverse. Having a written definition of a "valid impulse" helps filter noise from signal.
One possible definition:
- Candle body at least 1.5x the average body size of the last 20 candles.
- Close in the top or bottom 25% of the candle's range (strong close).
- Breaks a recent swing high or low, or a marked level.
- Followed by a candle that doesn't retrace more than 50% of the impulse.
Additional filters that help:
1. Time of day: impulses at 08:30 UK or 13:30 UK have more follow-through than at 11:00 or 19:00.
2. Spread at the time of impulse: if spread is wide, the impulse may be partly spread noise.
3. Related market confirmation: DXY or yields moving the same way.
Once defined, track it. How often does an impulse that meets all criteria extend at least 1x its own size within the next 5 candles?
What's your definition of a valid impulse on gold, or do you trade without one?
