When evaluation rules and funded account rules aren't the same

When evaluation rules and funded account rules aren't the same

People spend a lot of time on the evaluation rules, since that's the hurdle in front of them. But many firms have different rules for funded accounts, and those are the rules you'll actually trade under for months.

Common differences: news trading might be allowed in evaluation but restricted on funded accounts, or the other way around. Weekend holding might be allowed in one and not the other. Some firms add a consistency rule only on funded accounts, affecting payouts. Maximum lot sizes, leverage, and even the platform can differ.

The risk is passing the evaluation with a style that's not allowed on the funded account. Then you either have to change how you trade, which might not work as well, or risk breaching the funded rules.

What I'd do before buying an evaluation: read the funded account rules first, then the evaluation rules. Make sure your strategy fits both. If there's a difference, trade the evaluation as if the funded rules already applied. That way, nothing changes when you're funded.

Check too whether rules on the funded account can change after you get it, and how much notice the firm gives.

The funded rules are the ones that decide whether you get paid, so they deserve more attention than they usually get.

Payout conditions are part of the funded rules and often where the surprises are. Minimum trading days per payout cycle, a minimum profit before a payout can be requested, consistency requirements and a waiting period after the first trade are all common. They don't appear in the evaluation at all. Reading the payout section before starting means you know how long it will realistically take to get the first payout, which affects how you plan the first weeks on the funded account. Writing those conditions on a sticky note next to the screen sounds silly, but it keeps them in view when it matters.

Some firms present funded accounts as simulated and others as live, and the rules sometimes depend on which. On simulated funded accounts, the firm has more flexibility to set rules, while live accounts might follow the broker's conditions more closely. That can affect execution, slippage and spreads compared with the evaluation. If the firm says the funded account is on a different server or type, I'd treat the first week as a check on how conditions compare with what you saw in the evaluation. Comparing average spreads and fills over the first few dozen trades with the evaluation numbers gives a concrete answer rather than a feeling.

Payout rules, consistency rules and news restrictions are the most common differences. Some firms allow news trading in the evaluation but restrict it on funded accounts, which can change a strategy completely.

Reading the funded account rules before buying the evaluation is the best approach. If the strategy only works under the evaluation rules, passing does not help much.

Leverage often changes between evaluation and funded accounts too. Some firms give higher leverage in the evaluation and reduce it on the funded account, or limit it on certain instruments. If your strategy uses a lot of margin, like several positions at once on gold or indices, lower leverage on the funded account could mean orders get rejected or you can't hold as many positions. Checking the margin requirements on the funded account's symbol specifications, before you pass, avoids discovering this on your first funded trade. Support can confirm the figures if the specifications aren't visible yet.

Proprietary trading firms offer funded accounts where the trader uses the firm's capital. Many advertise tight spreads and fast fills. What they often provide is a simulated environment.

In a simulation, orders aren't sent to real markets. The firm's own system fills them against a price feed. Slippage may be nonexistent or artificially modeled, and rejections rarely occur.

That makes performance look better than it would on a live account. A scalping strategy that clears the evaluation with ease may struggle when real money and real execution arrive.

The rules also differ. Many firms prohibit trading around news, restrict holding trades over weekends, or ban certain strategies that exploit feed delays. Violations void the account without any warning in the trading platform itself.

Another difference is the feed. The firm's price source might be a single provider, with its own spikes and gaps, not matching what a live broker shows.

Considering a funded account as a training ground with different physics, not a replica of the market, keeps expectations realistic.

How closely did results on a funded or simulated account match results on a real one?

Do the funded account rules apply from the first trade, or is there a grace period? Some firms give new funded accounts a period where certain rules are relaxed, or where the first payout has different conditions. Others apply everything from the start. Knowing this helps plan the first weeks. If there's a stricter rule for the first payout cycle, like a higher minimum number of trading days, the first month might need a slower pace than you'd expect after passing the evaluation. Reading the welcome email carefully usually covers it.
