Trading hours per symbol: why some CFDs stop quoting for an hour

FX trades almost around the clock during the week, so it's easy to assume every symbol on your platform does too. Many don't. Index CFDs, commodities and some exotic pairs have specific trading hours, and some have a daily break when they don't quote at all.

Gold and oil CFDs often have a short daily break around the US evening. Index CFDs follow the hours of their underlying futures or cash markets, with breaks between sessions. Some brokers' exotic FX pairs only quote during the main hours of the local market.

This matters for a few reasons. Orders placed during a break won't be executed until trading resumes, and they might be filled at a gap. Stops won't trigger during the break either. An EA that tries to trade during a break gets errors. And charts can show gaps or flat candles that look like real price action.

The symbol specifications in MT4 and MT5 show the trading sessions for each instrument. I'd check this for anything you trade outside of the main FX pairs.

If you trade gold or indices, knowing the daily break time helps avoid holding a tight position into it, since the reopening price can jump. And for EAs, adding the session hours to the logic avoids a whole set of errors.

Daylight saving changes shift these hours too, often in ways that aren't obvious. A daily break that happens at a fixed time in New York will move relative to server time and your local time when the clocks change. Brokers usually announce the new hours, but EAs with hardcoded session times can end up trying to trade during the break for a few weeks. Reading the session times from the symbol properties at runtime, instead of hardcoding them, is the cleaner approach for EAs that trade these instruments. Checking the session times in the symbol specification after each clock change is the simplest way to stay on top of it.

Spreads before and after the break are worth watching too. The last minutes before a daily break and the first minutes after it often have much wider spreads. Gold in particular can show a big spread right after the break. If you trade gold, avoiding the few minutes around the break is a simple rule. It's similar to the FX rollover spread spike, but on gold and indices the effect can be more pronounced and last a bit longer. Waiting a few minutes after the break before trading usually lets spreads settle back to normal levels.

Index CFDs and commodities often have a daily break, and some exotic pairs have limited hours. An EA that assumes 24-hour trading can try to place orders during the break, which will fail.

The symbol specification in MT5 shows the trading sessions for each instrument. Checking it before adding a new symbol to an EA, and coding the session times into the logic, prevents those errors.

Some instruments have different hours on different days. Index CFDs might close early on Fridays or have shorter sessions around holidays. Oil and gold might have a break that changes when the US switches to or from daylight saving. Keeping a simple note of the hours for each instrument you trade, and updating it a couple of times a year, saves confusion. The symbol specification window in MT4 and MT5 lists them, but it's easy to forget to check until a position is stuck in a break. A small table in the trading notes covers it.

How does this affect stops and pending orders? During the break, the instrument isn't quoting, so nothing can trigger. When trading resumes, the first price might be quite different from the last price before the break, especially if news came out during it. A stop could fill at that new price rather than at your level. For short breaks this is usually minor, but for longer ones, like the daily index breaks, it's a small gap risk to keep in mind when holding through them. For most scalpers, simply not holding through the break avoids it entirely.
