Marking scheduled news times on the chart with vertical lines
This is a small habit that's helped me more than most indicators. Before the session, I put a vertical line on the chart at the time of each high impact release for the pairs I trade. Sometimes a second, lighter line for medium impact ones.
The reason is simple. The calendar lives in another tab, and it's easy to lose track of time while watching a setup develop. A vertical line ten minutes ahead on the chart is hard to ignore. You can see at a glance whether a trade has room to work before the release, or whether you'd be holding it into the number.
Some indicators do this automatically by pulling a calendar feed, and there are a few for MT4, MT5 and TradingView. They're convenient, but I've seen them get times wrong around daylight saving changes or miss releases, so I check them against a proper calendar.
Drawing them by hand takes two minutes and forces me to read the calendar each morning, which is half the point.
The lines also make journal screenshots more useful. When reviewing a trade later, you can see immediately whether a release was close to the entry or exit, which explains a lot of strange moves.
