Marking scheduled news times on the chart with vertical lines

Marking scheduled news times on the chart with vertical lines

This is a small habit that's helped me more than most indicators. Before the session, I put a vertical line on the chart at the time of each high impact release for the pairs I trade. Sometimes a second, lighter line for medium impact ones.

The reason is simple. The calendar lives in another tab, and it's easy to lose track of time while watching a setup develop. A vertical line ten minutes ahead on the chart is hard to ignore. You can see at a glance whether a trade has room to work before the release, or whether you'd be holding it into the number.

Some indicators do this automatically by pulling a calendar feed, and there are a few for MT4, MT5 and TradingView. They're convenient, but I've seen them get times wrong around daylight saving changes or miss releases, so I check them against a proper calendar.

Drawing them by hand takes two minutes and forces me to read the calendar each morning, which is half the point.

The lines also make journal screenshots more useful. When reviewing a trade later, you can see immediately whether a release was close to the entry or exit, which explains a lot of strange moves.

Colour coding helps if you trade several currencies. A red line for USD releases, blue for EUR, green for GBP, for example. On a EURUSD chart you'd see both red and blue lines, and you know which side of the pair the news affects. On a cross like EURGBP, USD lines matter less, though big US data can still move everything. It's a quick visual that saves reading the calendar entry every time you glance at the chart. Two or three colours is plenty. More than that and the lines start to blur together on a busy calendar day.

For EAs, the same information can feed a news filter, but the chart lines are still useful for you as the person supervising the EA. If you can see the EA is about to trade close to a release line, you can check whether the filter is set correctly. Visual checks like this catch problems with automated calendars, like a release missing from the feed, that you'd otherwise only discover after a bad fill. A quick look at the chart lines before the EA's active window is a cheap sanity check on the filter.

Seeing a vertical line approach on the chart is much harder to ignore than a calendar on another screen.

Some traders add a shaded zone for the minutes before and after the release, matching their news rule. That makes it clear when the no-trade period starts and ends. For prop accounts with news restrictions, it is especially useful.

Time zones are the main thing to get right. Calendars list times in a time zone you choose, and the chart shows broker server time. If the two don't match, the lines end up in the wrong place. I'd set the calendar to the broker's server time, or calculate the offset carefully, and double check around daylight saving changes. A line an hour off is worse than no line, since it gives false confidence. Checking a past release against a known spike on the chart confirms the offset is right.

A useful extra is marking the end of the risk window too, not just the release time. For example, a line at the release and another fifteen or thirty minutes later, showing when you'd consider trading again. That turns the line into a zone you can see coming. When price approaches that zone, you know to stop opening trades. When it passes, you know you can look again. It's a small change that makes the chart more practical for actual trading decisions rather than just a reminder. A different colour for the end line keeps the two easy to tell apart.
