LD4, NY4 and broker server locations: what they mean for a retail scalper

Broker websites sometimes mention data centres like LD4 in London or NY4 in New York. These are the facilities where a lot of FX trading infrastructure is located, including liquidity providers and banks. A broker with servers there is physically close to the prices it sources.

For you, the relevant distance is between your platform and the broker's server. If you trade from home, your connection goes from your house to the broker's server location. If you're far from that location, there's more delay. A VPS in or near the same data centre reduces that delay to very little.

How much it matters depends on how you trade. For manual scalping on M1 or M5, a delay of tens of milliseconds is unlikely to change your results much. Your reaction time is far slower than that. For EAs that react to fast price changes, especially around news, it can matter more.

To check, look at the ping shown in your platform's connection status. MT4 and MT5 show it in the bottom corner. If it's well over a hundred milliseconds, a VPS closer to the broker might help.

Most retail scalpers will gain more from better entries than faster servers. But knowing where your broker's server is helps you choose a VPS location if you need one.

One thing to check is that the broker's trading server, not just its liquidity, is in the data centre they mention. Some brokers advertise their liquidity connections in LD4 but run the trading server somewhere else. The ping test tells you the real story. If you rent a VPS in London and still see high ping to the broker, the server might be elsewhere. Support can usually tell you which location the trading server is in if it isn't clear from the site. A ping well under twenty milliseconds from a London VPS usually means the server really is close by.

Free VPS offers from brokers are common, usually with a minimum volume or balance requirement. They're often located near the broker's server, which is convenient. The downside is that they may be shared and limited in resources, and if you stop meeting the requirement, they can be switched off. For running a single EA they're often fine. For anything important, a paid VPS you control is usually more reliable, and the cost is small compared to what a crashed EA can cost. For a single EA on a small account, a cheap paid VPS usually covers it, and you control when it restarts.

For most retail scalpers, the server location matters less than the stability of the connection. A VPS in the same data centre can reduce ping to 1 or 2 milliseconds, but a manual trader clicking a mouse adds far more delay than that.

Where it does matter is for EAs reacting to fast moves. If the broker's server is in LD4 and the VPS is in Frankfurt or Amsterdam, the extra few milliseconds are small. If the VPS is on another continent, the difference becomes noticeable during news.

Ping times matter more for some strategies than others. A scalper on M1 entering at market during fast moves might notice a difference between 2ms and 50ms. A trader on M15 entering a few times a day won't. Before paying for a VPS near the broker's server, I'd think honestly about whether my strategy is sensitive to that. For most retail traders, a stable connection is more important than the absolute lowest ping. Dropped connections or random delays cause more harm than a steady 30ms ever would. For a lot of people, that means a reliable home connection is enough.

Is anyone testing whether a VPS in the same data centre actually improves their fills? I'd be curious to see real numbers. In theory it should reduce slippage, especially on news. In practice, the broker's own processing time might be the bigger factor. Logging fill times and slippage before and after moving to a closer VPS would show whether it made a difference. If the numbers don't change, the extra cost might not be justified, and a cheaper VPS elsewhere might do just as well. Even a few weeks of logs before and after the move would tell you.
