Spread betting vs CFD accounts for UK scalpers

Spread betting vs CFD accounts for UK scalpers

If you're in the UK, a lot of brokers offer both spread betting and CFD accounts. On the screen they look almost the same. Same charts, same prices, often the same platform. But there are differences that matter for scalping.

The big one people mention is tax. In the UK, spread betting profits have generally been free of capital gains tax for individuals, while CFD profits are taxable but losses can be offset. That's the general position, but it depends on your circumstances, so check with HMRC guidance or an accountant rather than taking a forum post as advice.

For trading itself: spread betting is quoted in pounds per point, rather than lots. That changes how you calculate size, and it can be confusing if you're used to lots. Some brokers' spread bet accounts have wider spreads than their CFD accounts because the cost is built into the spread instead of a separate commission. Others are similar.

Platform access can also differ. Some brokers only offer MT4 or MT5 on CFD accounts and their own platform on spread betting, which matters if you use EAs.

So I'd compare the actual spread on the pairs and times you trade, check platform support, and get the tax side checked properly before choosing.

Position sizing in pounds per point takes a bit of getting used to, especially on pairs where a point means different things. On EURUSD a point is usually the fourth decimal, but some brokers quote spread bets with different point definitions on gold or indices. I'd open a demo spread bet account and place a tiny trade on each instrument first, just to check what one pound per point actually means in movement. It's easy to get wrong by a factor of ten. A wrong decimal on a pounds per point bet can turn a small trade into a big one without you noticing until the P&L moves.

Another difference is how the account handles expiry. Some spread bets are quoted as daily rolling contracts, others as quarterly futures based ones with different spreads and no overnight financing. For scalpers, the daily rolling version is usually what you want, but make sure you're on that one, since the quarterly prices can look slightly off from spot and have wider spreads. The product name on the ticket usually tells you which you're trading. If the prices you're seeing look slightly off from what you'd expect for spot, that's usually the first clue you're looking at the wrong contract.

For UK residents, the tax treatment is a big difference, as you say. Another detail: spread betting is priced per point, which can make position sizing feel different from lots, and some platforms round the stake in ways that slightly change the risk.

Funding and overnight costs can also be calculated differently on the two account types at the same broker. For scalpers who close every day this matters less, but it is worth checking before choosing.

Guaranteed stops are something spread betting providers sometimes offer that most FX brokers don't. You pay a premium, usually a wider spread or a fee when the stop is triggered, and in return the stop fills at exactly your level even through gaps. For weekend holds or event risk, that can be a sensible expense. For quick scalps, the premium probably isn't justified. But it's an option that's easy to overlook if you've only used MT4 style accounts. The details vary a lot between providers, so read how each one prices the guarantee and when the fee is charged.

Taxes are the obvious reason people choose spread betting in the UK, but the rules can change and personal circumstances matter a lot. I'd check the current rules or talk to an accountant rather than relying on forum posts, including this one. If trading becomes your main income, the tax treatment might be different from what you assume. It's the kind of thing that's easy to get wrong and expensive to fix later, so getting proper advice early is sensible. Rules also differ between countries, so what applies in the UK won't apply elsewhere, and providers' marketing tends to skip the details.
