The trade you take just to make the day green

You're slightly down on the day, maybe a small loss or a couple of scratches. There's still time in the session. A setup appears that's not quite your best, but it's close enough, and if it works, the day ends in profit. So you take it.

I think this trade is one of the most common ways to turn a small red day into a bigger one. The motivation isn't the setup, it's the number on the screen. That changes how you manage it. You might take profit too early to lock in the green, or hold too long because closing at a loss means the day stays red.

The underlying idea, that a red day is a failure, doesn't really hold up. Over a month, red days are normal. What matters is whether you followed your process and how the month adds up. A small red day with good decisions is better than a green day where you broke rules to get there.

What helps me: I look at results weekly, not daily. During the session I try not to look at the daily P&L figure, and some platforms let you hide it. I also check each trade against my criteria before entering, and if the honest answer is that I'm taking it for the day's number, I skip.

Anyone else find hiding the P&L figure helps?

There's a version of this at the other end too: stopping early on a green day to protect it, even when good setups keep coming. That's less damaging than forcing trades, but it can also distort results, because you're cutting off the days when the strategy is working. If your rules say to trade a session, trading only until you're green means your good days are capped and your bad days aren't. Over time that can make a decent strategy look worse than it is. I'd rather take every valid setup the rules allow and let the daily result fall where it does.

One question worth asking yourself is whether the daily result actually affects anything real. For prop traders it can, since daily loss limits and consistency rules make the day matter. For your own account, the daily result is mostly a psychological marker. If it's the second case, reframing the day as one part of the week can help. If it's the first, the daily number does matter, and the right response is to plan the day's risk in advance so you're not improvising near the limit. That planning bit is the part people skip, and it makes the biggest difference.
