Free Trials at Prop Firms: How to Use Them as Real Testing

Post by FXS Prop Desk »

Most firms offer a free trial or demo of the challenge environment. It is usually treated as a toy, but it can answer practical questions before you pay.

Things to measure during a trial:
  • Spreads on your main pairs at your trading times, recorded several days in a row.
  • Commission per lot and how it shows in the account history.
  • Execution: slippage on market orders and on stops during a fast move.
  • Dashboard accuracy: does the drawdown floor update in real time?
  • Platform tools: does your EA or indicator run?
What a trial cannot tell you: how payouts and support work under real conditions.

A practical detail: firms often state the inactivity period in calendar days, not trading days, so a two-week holiday plus a slow week can already come close to a 30-day limit. Putting the deadline in your calendar the day you take a break is the simplest protection.

Did a free trial ever change your decision about a firm?

I treat a free trial like a paid week of research. For five London sessions I log spread at 08:05, commission per lot from history, and one intentional market order during a news spike to see stop slip.

Dashboard lag is the silent fail. On one trial the drawdown floor updated only after a refresh, which would have made my usual hard daily stop unreliable if I had paid first.

Inactivity rules in calendar days are easy to blow. I put the expiry in my phone the morning I start a holiday, because a two week break plus a slow return week already threatens a 30 day limit.

A trial will not teach payout behaviour, so I still read recent withdrawal threads before funding. Execution and platform fit are what the trial can answer.

Did a trial ever talk you out of a firm on spread alone? Dashboard accuracy was the bigger surprise for me.
