News Trading Restrictions at Prop Firms: The Two-Minute Window and Its Variants

Post by FXS Prop Desk »

"No trading around high-impact news" sounds clear until you look at how it is enforced. The common variants:
  1. Open/close window: no trades opened or closed from X minutes before to X minutes after the release (2 to 5 minutes is typical). Trades opened earlier may stay open.
  2. Profit exclusion: trading is allowed, but profit from trades inside the window is removed from payout.
  3. Full ban on certain events: NFP, CPI, FOMC, sometimes central bank speeches.
  4. Only on funded stage: free during evaluation, restricted once funded.
Things that trip people up:
  • A stop loss or take profit that triggers inside the window can count as "closing" a trade.
  • Which calendar the firm uses. Impact ratings differ between providers.
  • Instrument scope: a US CPI release may restrict all USD pairs, indices and gold, not only EURUSD.
A practical workaround is to keep a separate list of the week's restricted events every Monday and simply be flat before them.

Which version of the news rule does your firm use, and has a SL/TP inside the window ever caused trouble?

The stop that fills inside the window is the variant that caught me. I had flattened before NFP on purpose, left a runner from an earlier London long, and the take profit printed ninety seconds after the release. The firm counted that close as news trading even though the entry was clean.

Calendar mismatch is quieter but just as annoying. One desk used a provider that tagged a mid-tier USD speech as red while my usual calendar left it orange, so I was flat for an event they did not care about and unprotected for one they did.

Instrument scope is where people get surprised. A US CPI window that also freezes gold and the indices means a hedge you thought was safe can still breach the rule.

I now keep a Monday sheet with each restricted print and the exact open and close times in my broker clock. I also note whether pending orders count, because that detail rarely sits in the headline FAQ.

Has your firm ever treated a trailing stop fill differently from a manual close inside the same window? That distinction still feels underspecified in most FAQ pages.
