Trading While Ill or Travelling: When to Switch to Observation Mode

Post by FXS Prop Desk »

Illness, jet lag and travel affect concentration more than most traders admit. A short written policy avoids deciding in the moment.

Situations worth covering:
  • Illness: fever, painkillers or poor sleep reduce reaction speed and patience.
  • Jet lag: trading your usual session at an unusual local time.
  • Travel days: unreliable internet, laptop instead of the usual setup.
A possible policy:
  • Observation mode: no live trades, only marking levels and noting setups.
  • Reduced mode: one setup only, half size, maximum two trades.
  • Normal mode: only after a full night's sleep and the usual setup.
For prop traders, the policy should also cover the account rules: inactivity limits, weekend holding and how to close positions from a phone if needed.

Observation days are not wasted. Notes taken on those days often show which setups you would have taken impulsively.

Do you have a rule for trading when you are ill or travelling?

I wrote a short policy after a flu week where I took five trades I would never have touched healthy. Fever plus painkillers cut my patience, and I kept forcing setups that were not there.

Observation mode for me means open charts, mark levels, and write one line per setup I would have taken. No orders, not even on demo, because demo still scratches the itch in a bad way.

Reduced mode is stricter than it sounds. One setup only, half size, and a hard stop after two trades or one loss, whichever comes first. Travel days with hotel wifi go straight into that bucket.

For prop accounts I also list the inactivity clock and how I would flatten from a phone if the laptop dies mid flight. That checklist took ten minutes and has already saved one scramble.

When you switch back to normal mode, do you require a full night of sleep only? I have been testing one observation session first to confirm the rhythm is back.
