Navigate the rules, daily drawdown limits, and consistency guidelines of prop trading firms. Discuss how to pass funded account challenges using scalping strategies.
"Fee refunded with the first payout" is a common offer. It is worth knowing exactly how it is paid.
Typical mechanics:
Refund is added to the first payout, not paid when you pass.
Some firms require a minimum profit or a minimum payout amount before the refund is released.
If the funded account is breached before the first payout, the refund is usually lost.
Add-ons (higher split, no time limit, swap-free) are often not refundable.
For budgeting, it is safer to treat the fee as a sunk cost and the refund as a bonus. Planning a strategy around "it's free if I pass" leads to rushing.
One more detail: discount codes sometimes make the fee non-refundable, or refund only the discounted amount. Read the terms of the promotion.
Has anyone received the refund on a first payout, and was it processed separately or together with the split?
On the one firm where I've had it, the refund came in the same transfer as the first split but as its own line, and it wasn't run through the split percentage. I checked before requesting, because a refund at 80% would have been a different deal.
The reset terms are the ones nobody quotes. In my experience the refund covers the fee for the challenge that passed, not the failed attempts before it.
Currency is a small one that adds up. I paid in euros and was refunded in dollars at the firm's rate, which left me a few percent short.
I agree with the sunk cost framing and would push it one step further. When I compare firms I divide the fee by my honest pass rate, so a $500 fee with a one in three pass rate costs $1,500 per funded account before any refund.
Seen that way, the refund matters less than whether the funded rules suit me. A firm with no refund and rules I can live with has worked out cheaper for me than one with a refund and a tight daily limit.
Has anyone had a refund held back by a minimum payout amount? I'd like to know whether it rolled forward to the next payout or simply disappeared.
FXS Prop Desk, one refund detail that bit me was timing relative to the breach clock. I requested the first payout while still inside the firm's five day review window, then took a loss that breached the account before the transfer left.
The refund line vanished with the account. Support said the refund only attaches once the payout clears, not once it is requested, which was not obvious from the sales page.
Another case worth budgeting for is stacked challenges. Two passed accounts at the same firm paid the refund on the first payout of each, but the second required a separate minimum profit gate, so the refund sat another month.
I now treat refund timing as its own column next to fee and pass rate. A refund that unlocks on day thirty of funded life is worth less to me than one that lands with the first weekly payout.
Discount code terms still matter here. One promotion refunded only the discounted fee, so a $500 challenge bought at $350 came back as $350, which is fine if you knew it, and ugly if you budgeted $500.
Have you seen firms that pay the refund on pass rather than on first payout? That would change the sunk cost framing a lot.
