Matching my broker's trade timestamps with my journal and screenshots

Matching my broker's trade timestamps with my journal and screenshots

a small annoyance that became a bigger problem: the times in my journal didn't match the times on my statement. I'd write the time from my computer clock, while the platform uses the server time, and then I couldn't line things up when I reviewed.

It mattered when I was trying to work out whether a bad fill happened at a news release. I could see the time on my screenshot but I wasn't sure which time zone it was in. A few of my notes were off by an hour or two and I spent far too long confused.

My fix is to put the server time and the GMT time on the same chart with a clock indicator, and I note the GMT time in my journal. Screenshots include the clock. For the statement, I check the offset once and write it at the top of my sheet, and I update it when daylight saving changes.

It's a boring thing, but when you need to find out what happened at 13:30 on a specific day, it's essential that you can find the right candle. It also helps if I ever need to send a query to support with exact times.

To add to this, daylight saving is the thing that catches most people out. The UK and the US change their clocks on different weekends, so for a week or two the gap between London and New York shifts, and so does the server time offset on a lot of platforms. Every year I put a reminder in my calendar for both change dates and recheck the offset at the top of my sheet. Before I did that, I had a couple of weeks of journal notes all shifted by an hour and it made my session analysis useless.

Another tip that helped me: I keep the trade ticket number in the journal. The statement has it, the platform has it, and it is the same everywhere regardless of time zones. When I want to match a screenshot to a statement line, I search by ticket instead of trying to line up times. Times are still useful for knowing what session it was, but the ticket is the real key that ties everything together. It took me far too long to start doing this and it saves so much confusion.
