Economic Calendar Integration on Charts

Post by FXS Prop Desk »

Showing calendar events directly on the chart saves switching windows and helps review past reactions.

Options:
  • MT5 has a built-in economic calendar that can display events on charts.
  • Third-party indicators for MT4/MT5.
  • TradingView shows some events on charts.
Benefits:
  • Seeing an upcoming release before entering.
  • Reviewing how a pair reacted to past releases.
  • Combining with alerts a few minutes before events.
Limitations:
  • Impact ratings differ between providers.
  • Time zone mismatches can show events at the wrong time.
Checking times against the calendar's original source once each week is a good habit.

Another practical use is post-trade review: looking at a losing trade with the calendar overlay sometimes shows that the stop was hit by a release that was simply missed during preparation.

Do you show news events on your charts, and which tool do you use?

I use the MT5 built-in calendar on charts, but only for review, not for live trading. Live, the little event icons are easy to miss, and I'd rather have a written list of times next to the screen.

The time zone point is the one that's bitten me. My broker's server runs on GMT+2 or GMT+3 depending on US daylight saving, and the chart events follow server time. For a week or two each spring and autumn, the gap between server time and London isn't what I expect.

For review the overlay is great. I go through losing trades on Sunday with events visible, and roughly one in ten stops in a month turns out to be within five minutes of a release I hadn't written down.

Spotting a missed release in review is the most useful part for me. Do you trust the impact ratings from the MT5 calendar, or keep your own list of events that move your pairs?

Hi,

most of the time i just check next few days ahead to be sure what kind of news will come out and be prepared when not to trade.

PTScalper's habit of checking a few days ahead is what I do live. The chart overlay stays for Sunday review only.

The attached chart is an illustration of the DST trap on a broker server that sits on GMT+3 while London is still on summer time. A 13:30 US release is drawn on the chart at what looks like 15:30 server, and if you read that as London you are two hours late to the flat window.

I keep a handwritten list of the next five red and orange events in London time next to the screen. The MT5 icons are a backup during review when I want to see whether a stop sat on top of a print I missed.

Impact ratings from the built in calendar are too soft for my pairs. I maintain a short list of events that actually move EURUSD and GBPUSD for me, and everything else is noise even when the icon is red.

FXS Prop Desk, when you use the overlay for review, do you filter to high impact only, or leave medium events visible too? Medium is where most of my missed releases hid.
