Month-Start Effects: The First Week and the Data Cluster

The first days of each month bring a cluster of data that can drive the direction of currencies for the following weeks.

Manufacturing PMIs and ISM surveys arrive on the first business days. The US employment report comes on the first Friday, along with other labor data like JOLTS job openings earlier in the week. Central banks sometimes hold meetings in the first week, and Australia's RBA meets on the first Tuesday of many months.

Because so much arrives together, volatility is often higher in the first week than in the third. Markets reprice expectations for interest rates, and trends can start or reverse.

New month flows also appear. Investors rebalance and start new allocations. Model-based funds adjust positions at month-end and start.

For traders, practical points include knowing the calendar of the first week, and planning around it. Some prefer to trade less before the employment report, since the direction of the week often depends on it. Others adjust position sizes.

Compare volatility across weeks. Calculate the average daily range for the first week of the month against the rest, over several months. The difference can guide expectations for stops and targets.

Be careful about over-interpretation of single data points, as discussed earlier. Look for patterns across several indicators.

Practical step: mark the first-week releases for next month, and note how your pair's daily range compares with average.

Comparing first-week ranges with the rest of the month is a quick study. If the first week is clearly wider on your pair, set stops and targets with that in mind. Take the daily ranges for the last 12 months, group them by week of the month, and average each group. It takes about 20 minutes in a spreadsheet. On dollar pairs, the first week often stands out because of ISM data and payrolls, but it depends on the period. If your 20 pip stop works fine in the quiet third week but keeps getting hit in the first week, the answer might be a wider stop with a smaller size in the first week, rather than giving up on the setup.

The days right before payrolls can be strangely quiet. Lots of people wait for Friday, so breakouts earlier in the week often lack follow-through. Wednesday and Thursday sometimes show a tight range on EURUSD and USDJPY, with false breaks in both directions. Then payrolls at 8:30 New York, 1:30pm Lagos in summer, sets the direction for the next week. If your strategy depends on breakouts, it's worth checking your journal for how they performed in the two days before NFP. Many people find those trades do worse, and simply reduce size or skip breakout entries on Thursday afternoon until the number is out.
