Flash vs Final Eurozone HICP: When the Second Release Still Matters
Posted: Wed Oct 07, 2026 5:05 pm
Eurozone inflation (HICP) is published first as a flash estimate at the start of the month and later as a final reading. The flash usually moves EUR; the final rarely does — with some exceptions.
Why the final usually matters little:
Do you trade the flash HICP, and have you ever seen the final reading move EUR?
Why the final usually matters little:
- Revisions are typically small, often 0.0 or 0.1 percentage points.
- Country data (Germany, France, Spain, Italy) already gives a good picture before the flash.
- When the flash was close to a threshold that the market cares about, and a revision would cross it.
- When the ECB is close to a decision and every detail counts.
- When component details (services, core) are revised more than the headline.
