Flash vs Final Eurozone HICP: When the Second Release Still Matters

Post by FXS Prop Desk »

Eurozone inflation (HICP) is published first as a flash estimate at the start of the month and later as a final reading. The flash usually moves EUR; the final rarely does — with some exceptions.

Why the final usually matters little:
  • Revisions are typically small, often 0.0 or 0.1 percentage points.
  • Country data (Germany, France, Spain, Italy) already gives a good picture before the flash.
When the final can matter:
  • When the flash was close to a threshold that the market cares about, and a revision would cross it.
  • When the ECB is close to a decision and every detail counts.
  • When component details (services, core) are revised more than the headline.
A practical approach is to treat the final release as low impact by default, but check the size of the flash surprise and the ECB timeline before dismissing it.

Do you trade the flash HICP, and have you ever seen the final reading move EUR?

FXS Prop Desk, I trade the flash HICP when the surprise is clear and the ECB meeting is inside two weeks. The final reading is a skip by default unless the flash sat on a threshold the market was debating.

Revisions of 0.0 or 0.1 rarely move EUR enough after costs for a scalp. I still open the calendar, though, because component revisions in services have surprised me twice in the last year.

When the flash was soft by a tenth and the final nudged back toward consensus into an ECB week, I saw a short EUR fade worth about twelve pips before it died. That is rare enough that I size half if I take it at all.

Country prints ahead of the flash already do most of the work. By the time the final lands, my bias is usually set and I am not looking for a fresh ticket.

I treat the final as low impact unless ECB risk is high. Have you ever held a position into the final on purpose, or do you always flatten before it?
