Choosing Account Size for a Challenge: Small vs Large

Post by FXS Prop Desk »

Is it better to buy one 100k challenge or two 50k challenges? Points that help decide:
  • Diversification of failure: two accounts give two attempts, but often with correlated trading.
  • Fee per funded dollar: larger accounts are often cheaper per dollar.
  • Lot granularity: on small accounts, minimum lot sizes can make precise risk difficult on tight stops.
  • Psychology: bigger numbers feel different, even if the % risk is the same.
For a scalper using 3–5 pip stops, a 10k or 25k account can be too small to size precisely at 0.25% risk. That pushes toward larger accounts.

Context matters too. Three hundred trades collected over a single month of steady trend may look convincing but tell little about the next range-bound month. Spreading the sample over different volatility regimes is as important as the raw count.

How did you decide on your account size, and would you choose differently today?

I'd push back a little on the lot granularity point, at least for EURUSD. With a 0.01 lot step, a 10k account at 0.25% risk and a 4 pip stop wants 0.625 lots, so the worst rounding error is 0.8% of the intended risk.

Where it really bites is gold and indices. The same 10k at 0.25% with a 3 dollar stop on XAUUSD wants 0.083 lots, and with a 0.01 step the error can reach 6%, so I plotted both against account size in the attached illustration.

By 100k the gold figure is down to 0.6%, which is why I think the size decision depends on what you scalp more than on stop size alone. A EURUSD-only scalper loses almost nothing to rounding on a small account.

The point I'd add on two 50k accounts is that the fee per attempt isn't the whole story. If both run the same trades, they tend to fail on the same bad day, so you've paid twice for something close to one attempt.

I went with a single larger account for that reason. Did your two accounts ever diverge in a meaningful way, or did they mostly pass and fail together?

FXS Prop Desk, the fee math I care about now is daily loss room versus what the challenge costs. On a 50k with a 5% daily cap you have about 2,500 of room, and if the challenge fee is 300, three full daily losses already spent more than the fee in headroom before the account is dead.

That pushed me toward one larger account where the daily room is wide enough that a normal red day is a fraction of the fee, not a peer of it. Two 50k books with correlated trades still share one bad day, so the extra fee rarely buys independent lives.

I also want daily room of at least eight full 0.25% risk tickets before the soft stop. Under that, a normal losing streak trips the day before the edge has room to show.

Lot granularity still matters on gold, as I said before, but fee versus daily room decides size for me on FX only books. Would you pay more per funded dollar for a wider daily cap, or is the sticker fee still the main dial?
