Mentors and Communities: Choosing Who Influences Your Trading

The people you learn from shape your habits. A good mentor or group can speed up progress, and a bad one can cost you money and years.

A good mentor emphasizes process: risk control, journaling, and testing. They talk openly about losses, and encourage you to think for yourself. They do not pressure you to buy anything, or to trade their signals, or to use a specific broker.

Warning signs include claims of secret strategies, a focus on lifestyle and wealth, pressure to deposit quickly, and discouragement of questions. Be careful with anyone who shows only winning trades.

Communities can help with accountability and ideas. Look for groups that share journals and discuss mistakes, with moderators who remove scams and hype. A community where every post is a screenshot of profit teaches nothing.

Keep your independence. Test any idea from others on your own data before trusting it. Even good advice may not fit your schedule, risk tolerance, or personality.

Consider a trading partner, someone at your level with whom you review journals each week. The mutual accountability is often more valuable than a guru's opinions.

Watch how your mood changes after interacting with a group. If it increases anxiety, comparison, or impulsive trading, adjust your exposure.

Practical step: list the three sources of trading information you rely on most, and evaluate each against these criteria.

A trading partner at your own level really is underrated. Swapping journals once a week keeps both of you honest and costs nothing. To make it work, agree on a format so it doesn't turn into a chat about feelings. Something like: number of trades, rule breaks with a one line reason, total R, and one screenshot each of the best and worst decision of the week. Then each person asks the other one hard question. Twenty minutes on a Sunday is enough. It helps if you trade different pairs or sessions, because the other person isn't emotionally invested in the same moves and can see your mistakes more clearly. Pick someone who will actually tell you when you broke a rule.

Watching your mood after a group chat is a good test. If you leave feeling behind and itching to trade, that group is probably costing you money. The tricky part is that hype groups often feel friendly and supportive, so it's hard to leave. One thing that helps is muting them during your session and only reading in the evening after your review is done. By then you've already traded your plan and the screenshots of other people's wins can't pull you into a chase. If after a couple of weeks you notice you don't miss the group at all, that tells you something too. Keep the people who talk about process and losses, drop the rest without guilt.
