Scaling plan after funded: when to reduce scalp frequency

Post by LondonScalper »

Once I was funded, my instinct was to keep trading exactly as I had during the evaluation. It took me a couple of months to realise that the account size had changed what the right trade frequency was.

During the evaluation I traded around 12 to 15 scalps a day on EURUSD and gold. Each trade risked 0.5%. On a larger funded account, even at the same percentage risk, the absolute amounts were bigger, and so was my emotional reaction to each loss.

What I noticed in my journal: on the funded account, my afternoon trades had deteriorated. The morning was fine, but I was tired by 14:00, and the larger sums made the afternoon losses feel heavier, which led to more hesitation and more early exits.

My scaling plan now looks like this:

When I first move to a bigger account, I reduce the number of trades per day by about a third, keeping only the setups with the highest expectancy in my log.

I trade only the morning session for the first month on the new size.

I add back afternoon setups one at a time, only after the morning results at the new size match my previous results.

If the account grows by a further 50%, I repeat the process.

It feels counterintuitive to trade less with more capital. But my best-quality trades are a fraction of my total, and a bigger account rewards those far more than it rewards the marginal ones.

Cutting trade count by a third at a new size makes sense, but I'd also look at whether keeping 0.5% risk is right for the first month. Going from a small to a large account at the same percentage is a big jump in actual money.

When I moved up, I dropped to 0.3% for the first 20 trading days and only went back to my normal risk once my process grades matched the old account. Same idea as your morning only rule, just applied to size as well.

The afternoon fatigue point is real and I don't think it's only about the bigger sums. Twelve to fifteen scalps by 14:00 is a lot of decisions, and quality drops for most people well before that.

Your 50% growth trigger is a nice clear rule. Most scaling plans I've seen only go up, never step back down.

Do you have a rule for scaling back down if the new size underperforms for a month?

One thing I'd add to the scaling plan: watch for changes in fills, not just in your own behaviour. On bigger sizes the execution side can shift even if your trading doesn't.

When I went from about 1 lot to 3 lots on EURUSD, my average slippage on breakout entries roughly doubled. Not huge, around 0.15 pips, but on a scalp aiming for 6 pips that's a real cut to the edge.

The fix was moving some breakout entries to limit orders on the retest instead of market orders on the break. Fewer fills, but the trades I did get were cleaner.

So the setups that keep their edge at bigger size might not be the same ones that had the best expectancy at small size. I'd check the expectancy list again once you have a month at the new size.

Have you seen fills change as the account grew, or did the cost per lot stay the same?
