Securing Your Trading Accounts: Basic Steps That Block Most Attacks

Trading accounts hold money, which makes them targets. Most compromises come from weak habits, not clever hacking.

Start with passwords. Use a unique, long password for your broker, your email, and any payment accounts. A password manager makes this practical. Reusing a password across sites means a breach elsewhere exposes your trading account.

Enable two-factor authentication everywhere it is offered, preferably with an authenticator app instead of SMS, since phone numbers can be hijacked through SIM swapping.

Secure your email. Your email account is the master key, because password resets go there. Give it the strongest protection.

Be careful with platform logins. Never share your trading password or investor password with anyone, including people who promise to manage your account. Read-only investor passwords are safer for sharing performance, but still provide information.

Keep software updated, and avoid installing unknown expert advisors or indicators from untrusted sources, since they can contain malicious code.

Use secure networks. Avoid logging into trading accounts on public Wi-Fi without a trusted VPN.

Check withdrawal settings. Where possible, enable whitelisted withdrawal addresses and notifications for any changes.

Review account activity regularly and know how to freeze your account quickly.

Practical step: enable two-factor authentication on your broker and email today, and change any reused passwords.

Add one more: check which email the broker has on file and make sure it's not an old address you rarely use. If that inbox gets taken over, so can the trading account.

SIM swap is a real risk in a lot of places. If an authenticator app is offered, use it, and keep the backup codes written down somewhere offline.
