Building a Weekly Macro Briefing in Thirty Minutes

You do not need to follow every headline to keep a useful macro view. A simple weekly routine does most of the work.

Start with the calendar. On the weekend, list the high-impact events for the coming week for the currencies you trade, with date and time in your local zone. Mark central bank meetings, inflation data, employment reports, and growth releases.

Second, check the current stance of each relevant central bank: hawkish, neutral, or dovish, and the market's expectation for the next move. A quick look at interest rate futures or a reputable summary is enough.

Third, review the yield spread for your main pair and note whether it has been widening or narrowing, along with the direction of the dollar index.

Fourth, note the risk mood: whether equities are rising or falling, and whether safe havens are being bought.

Fifth, write two or three sentences summarizing your bias for each pair. For example: "Euro supported by higher yields, but weekly resistance nearby; dollar mixed ahead of inflation data."

Then link it to your trading plan: which days to avoid, where to reduce size, and which setups to prefer.

The point is not to predict but to know what could move the market and when.

Practical step: complete this routine this weekend, and compare your notes with what actually happened at the end of the week.

One thing that made my weekend notes actually useful: I keep last week's page open next to the new one. Takes two minutes to see where my bias was wrong, and it's usually the same mistake, reading a central bank as more hawkish than the market did.

If thirty minutes sounds like a lot, cut it down to the calendar and the one-line bias per pair. Those two do most of the work. The spread and risk mood checks are nice, but they rarely change what I actually do on Monday morning.

Holidays deserve a line in the calendar step. A US or UK bank holiday thins liquidity for the whole session and sometimes shifts the data schedule, payrolls moving to Thursday when the first Friday is a holiday being the classic example. Japanese holidays also matter more than people expect for yen pairs during Asia. It takes a minute to check and it explains a lot of the strange, quiet days that otherwise go into the journal as "no setups".
