Deep Focus for Traders, Protecting Your Attention
Your ability to concentrate is one of your most valuable trading assets. In a world of constant notifications, protecting it takes deliberate effort.
Why focus matters:
- Good analysis requires sustained attention
- Distractions lead to missed details and impulsive decisions
- Fragmented attention increases stress
- Deep focus makes learning faster
How to build and protect focus:
1. Create a dedicated workspace. Keep it tidy and free of unrelated items.
2. Silence your phone. Use Do Not Disturb, and allow only essential alerts.
3. Close unused apps and tabs. Keep only what you need.
4. Work in blocks. For example, 45 minutes of focused analysis followed by a short break.
5. Prepare before starting. Know your goal for each block.
6. Use single-tasking. Finish one task before beginning another.
7. Limit social media during sessions. Charts and feeds don't mix well.
8. Take care of basics. Sleep, hydration, and food affect concentration.
9. Practice mindfulness. Even a few minutes daily trains attention.
Signs of poor focus: reading the same candle three times, missing alerts, or finding yourself scrolling instead of analyzing.
When focus slips, take a short break rather than pushing through.
Attention is a limited resource. Guard it as carefully as you guard your capital.

Practical change that helped me: phone in another room during the session, laptop with only the charts and the journal open. It sounds simple but I noticed my entries got more patient within a week. If you can't put the phone away because of work or family, turn on a focus mode that only lets through calls from a few people. Close the browser tabs that aren't trading related too. Another useful one is working in blocks of 25 or 30 minutes with a short stand up break between, especially during slow periods. Long unbroken stretches of staring at a quiet chart are where boredom trades come from.

I can't stay sharp for six hours straight and I've stopped pretending. Now I pick two windows, usually the London open and the overlap, and let alerts cover the rest. Focus comes in bursts, so plan for bursts. In Lagos time during summer, that's roughly 8am to 10am and 1:30pm to 3:30pm, covering the London open and US data. Between them I do something completely different, away from the screen. If an alert fires at a level I care about, I come back and check. My trades from those two windows have been far better than the ones taken in the slow hours.
